Speak Out Conference

4th ANNUAL SPEAK OUT CONFERENCE
April 13 to 15, 2012 in Edmonton, AB

The Speak Out Conference is an opportunity for Alberta's youth to come together from every corner of the province once a year to discuss their perspectives and ideas on how to improve education.
This year, we will bring together 200 students, aged 14 to 19, to meet with Alberta Education. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about, and provide input on, the work and initiatives going on within Alberta Education.
There is no fee to attend the conference and meals will be provided for the duration of the conference. We will provide public transportation on Greyhound buses for out of town participants and your chaperones.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS FEBRUARY 29, 2012.

Overview: The Edmonton Journal Indoor Games is a community athletics (track and field) event that allows children from grades three through twelve the opportunity to experience the thrill of competition — against themselves and each other. Track events for girls and boys include 200m and 800m individual events as well as 8 x 200m relay events. Mixed relay events are offered for small elementary and junior high schools. Elementary long jump, a teachers’ relay race, and select invitational events are also available for participation

Since the launch of Our Children, Our Future: Getting it Right public consultations on the Education Act, I have received a great amount of feedback from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and interested Albertans across the province.
The point of this consultation was to hear from as many Albertans as possible, and in particular stakeholders who have not normally been a part of education talks before. Part of listening to all stakeholders is ensuring students’ voices are heard. As you know, I wrote a letter to all of Alberta’s K-12 students, and copies were sent to superintendents for distribution through schools. While the response from students has been encouraging, I understand that some of the letters were distributed to schools too late to meet the public January 8th deadline. In light of this, the date for student submission has been extended to January 18th.
Please ensure your schools distribute my letters asking students for their ideas, and ensure that they are aware of the new January 18th deadline.

Canada Post, University of Alberta and Edmonton Stamp Club are teaming up to host the Alberta 2012 Youth Stamp Design Contest. If you are a budding artist, or interested in Alberta History, or just plain want to win some great prizes, this may be of interest to you.
Children of Alberta are invited to submit their art work to the Edmonton Stamp Club. Four winning designs will be chosen by a panel of judges and the artists will win some great prizes. As well, the designs will become part of a sheet of stamps (labels) to celebrate the RCMP in Alberta.

The Alberta Centennial Education Savings (ACES) Plan was created to motivate parents to begin planning and saving for their children’s post-secondary education as early as possible.
The ACES Plan will contribute $500 into the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) of every child born to Alberta residents in 2005 and later. As well, grants of $100 are available to children of Alberta residents when they turn 8, 11 and 14 in 2005 and later, provided that the children are attending school.

The Black Gold ICT, which was a gold mine of information, now has been reshaped. It is now shared out into each of the four Grade Divisions for students. Division l (Grade 1-3), Division 11 (Grade 4-6), Division 111 (Grade 7 – 9) and Division V (Grade 10 – 12).

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program was established in 1982 through a grant by the Government of Canada to commemorate Terry's courage and tenacity in his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope. The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recognizes the benevolence of young Canadians and encourages them to continue in their humanitarian work while attending college or university in Canada.

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village
The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is an award-winning, open-air museum that depicts the history of east central Alberta by telling the story of Ukrainian immigrants who settled in this region to 1930 (1892-1930). Over thirty historic structures have been relocated to the museum, restored and furnished to a pre-1930 period, then staffed by costumed role-players who re-enact the historic routines and activities associated with that household, institution or business.

Visitors to the Ukrainian Village “travel back in time” to experience east central Alberta’s rural and agricultural history. They are able to visit a burdei (sod house) to see the first home of the earliest Ukrainian pioneers who began settling in this region 120 years ago. Visitors can visit the farmstead zone, a one-room school house, grocery store and hall in the rural community zone, and a fully-functioning grain elevator, blacksmith house, and other typical businesses in the townsite zone. There are also three churches of Eastern Byzantine Rite at the Ukrainian Village.

Design Exchange is proud to announce the 17th Annual Sears Canadian High School Design Competition. The aim of the competition is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines in schools across Canada. The goal of Habitat for Humanity is to help families break the cycle of poverty by providing affordable homeownership opportunities. Our homes are built by volunteers and donors and sold to qualified families.
There are three areas of criteria for qualifying to purchase a Habitat home:

Need:
•Families must have children under age 18 living at home.
•Their current housing is substandard, does not meet their needs, or their rent is more than 40 percent of income.
•They must have been residents of Canada for three years and of the Edmonton area for one year.
•The Habitat program is intended for families who have not previously owned a home.

Ability to pay:
•Income between $32,000 and $54,000 annually.
•At least one adult employed full-time year round.
•Good credit rating.
•Balance between debt and income.
•If a family has experienced bankruptcy, they must have been discharged for two years.

Willingness to partner:
•Families agree to work 500 hours at the build site in place of a cash down payment.
•They agree to keep home and yard in good condition.
•They agree to follow all Habitat for Humanity Edmonton policies.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a community-based charitable program that helps youth ages 4 - 18 participate in organized sports and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming, so they can develop important life skills, self-esteem and confidence.

The Leduc Jumpstart program will offer two sessions per year - the spring session which runs from January to June and a fall session from July to November.

Physical activity gives a lot more to youth than just rosy cheeks and a healthy weight. It helps build self-esteem, social skills, concentration and character. Also, it helps them learn how to work together, how to share and how to become a leader.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has completed their research on the connection between annual chocolate consumption vs. childhood obesity with 5 different countries. The annual results are as follows:

Switzerland - consumed 10.7 kg with a 15% obesity rate

Denmark - consumed 7.7 kg with a 14% obesity rate

The Foundation was established in 2008 in memory of John Hasselfield, a retired Calgary Board of Education (CBE) school principal and basketball coach, who devoted over 30 years to the education of countless students, both in the classroom and in the gym. The Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign seeks to build solidarity, raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa's grandmothers. The campaign was launched on March 7, 2006, on the eve of International Women's Day.
Since the launch, some 240 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action. To date, the campaign has raised more than $10 million for African grandmothers and the children in their care. SLF has directed these funds to community-level organizations in 15 sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support, such as food, housing grants, school fees for their grandchildren and grief counselling.
